Social Support Act

On 1 January 2007 the new Dutch Social Support Act (Wet maatschappelijke ondersteuning or Wmo) came into force. The act aims at improving the service provision to citizens and clients. The Act gives municipalities and local institutions greater responsibility for the care and welfare of citizens.

Scope

The new act provides the framework for the content of the work of MOVISIE. It devolves responsibility for social support largely to local government and strongly appeals to the responsibilities of individual citizens for the wellbeing of themselves, their families and their communities. It focuses on the following priority areas: Social cohesion in communities; youth at risk and parenting problems; client and user information, advice and support; informal care and volunteering; enhanced participation of people with disabilities, chronic psychiatric or psychosocial problems; service provision to these groups; social care, counseling and support for victims of violence in the home; public mental health care; and care for people with addiction problems.

MOVISIE and Wmo

Knowledge must work locally and MOVISIE is at the centre of local practice. This focus clearly comes to the fore in our support for the introduction and implementation of the Social Support Act. MOVISIE works closely together with the local partners and helps them to respond to the areas where the Social Support Act takes effect. The website Wmo (in Dutch) informs you about the activities of MOVISIE on the themes of the Wmo. For more information, please contact Bora Avric, project manager Wmo desk.

More information on the Social Support Act can also be found on the website of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
